Frequently asked questions
How does offline translation work?
The first time you translate with a language, the app downloads that language's pack (about 30 MB) once. After that, translation runs entirely on your device, with no internet connection. You can also download packs in advance in Settings → Offline language packs, for example before a trip.
Which languages can I translate offline?
59 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, Turkish, Polish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Malay, Swahili, Greek, Hebrew, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Persian, Tamil, Telugu, Filipino, Afrikaans, Albanian, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Esperanto, Estonian, Galician, Georgian, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Icelandic, Irish, Kannada, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Marathi, Maltese, Slovak, Slovenian and Welsh.
A language pack won't download
- Connect to the internet. Each pack needs a connection once.
- If "Download packs on Wi-Fi only" is on in Settings, connect to Wi-Fi or turn the option off.
- Make sure your device has free storage (about 30 MB per language).
The microphone or voice input doesn't work
- Allow microphone (and on iPhone and iPad, speech recognition) access for Kwik Translator in your device settings.
- Voice input uses your device's speech recognition. Some languages need an internet connection, or an offline speech pack installed in your device settings.
- With "Detect language" selected, the app listens in the language set under Settings → I speak.
Translations aren't read aloud, or the voice sounds wrong
Read-aloud uses your device's text-to-speech voices. If a voice for a language isn't installed, the app tells you. To add one:
- Android: Settings → System → Languages → Text-to-speech output (or your device's equivalent), then install the voice data for the language.
- iPhone and iPad: Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices.
The camera doesn't recognize the text
- On-device text recognition reads Latin-alphabet languages, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Devanagari (Hindi, Marathi, Nepali). Other scripts, such as Arabic, Cyrillic, Greek or Thai, aren't supported yet. Type the text in the Translate tab instead.
- Set the source language to the language on the sign or page, hold the phone steady, and get close enough for the text to be sharp.
- In live camera, drag and resize the box so it covers only the text you want.
How do I delete or stop my translation history?
Swipe an entry away in the History tab, or clear everything with the button at the top. To stop saving history, turn off Settings → Save translation history. History is stored only on your device.
How do I change ad and privacy choices?
- In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland: Settings → Ad privacy choices.
- iPhone and iPad: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
- Android: reset or delete your advertising ID in your device's privacy or Google settings.
Read the full privacy policy.
How do I turn notifications on or off?
Open Settings → Notifications in the app, or change notification permissions for Kwik Translator in your device settings.
How do I change the app's language?
Open Settings → App language. The app is available in 46 languages, or it can follow your device's language.
